Some of the world’s most exotic and desirable locales for travelers with a spirit of adventure and for vacationers, as well, can be found all over the South Pacific. Relatively few Americans travel here because the trip is much too long and expensive. A flight from the eastern U.S. (New York or Philadelphia) can take a full day – about 24 hours – just to reach the shores of Australia.
Flights to some of the spectacular islands dotting this Pacific landscape can take even longer. But, for those who have never visited Australia, New Zealand or islands such as Tahiti and Fiji, the long hours in the airplane are worth it.
Start with Australia. The “land down under,” as it commonly called, was once a penal colony that, over time, became inhabited with British subjects. Today, it is a beautiful country with major cities, such as Melbourne and Sydney and a fabulous “outback,” a still relatively-unspoiled area where native Aborigines reside. Vacationers coming to Australia should consider stays in one of its cities and a tour to the rugged Outback, an area that is sparsely populated, unless you count the wild animals (including kangaroos, of course) that roam free.
New Zealand, “the land of the kiwi,” is another worthwhile destination. It is much smaller than Australia, but every bit as beautiful. Its people are warm and friendly, the climate is pleasant and there are many opportunities for fun-filled adventure and outdoor activities. Of course, most people planning a vacation often build their itinerary around relaxation at a posh hotel, sun and surf activities, fine dining and live entertainment. Many of the islands in the South Pacific are able to provide that.
A trip to Fiji or Tahiti will land a vacationer in a deluxe hotel, provide daily access to outstanding cuisine and live entertainment. You will also have an opportunity to stretch out on beautiful white sandy beaches, and leave his or her stress-filled world behind.
These South Pacific destinations may cost a little more for North Americans willing to “take the plunge,” but it’s fair to say the additional expenditure will be worth it. These trips can easily be classified as “the vacation of a lifetime.” Yes, it can be that memorable.
So if you’re thinking about where you will go this summer, look into a trip to the South Pacific. It is adventure at its very finest; a trip you will be glad you took. If you do plan a trip to the South Pacific, keep this thought in mind: you will be spending the equivalent of two full days in the air; two days in which you will not be on the ground and enjoying your vacation. It’s important to plan your trip to last at least ten days, two full weeks, if possible. If you plan you trip accordingly, you will enjoy all the time you need to forget the rigors of your regular life.
